GSLS Biostatistics Initiative

In addition to providing biostatistics training courses, the GSLS Biostatistics Initiative also provides a structured opportunity for PhD students and post-doctoral researchers within the University to develop practical lecturing skills and experience. It is specifically aimed at individuals who have never lectured before (but who may have presented, demonstrated or supervised), are interested in developing experience in this area and who would be comfortable teaching practical biostatistical skills.

Successful completion of the training would allow particpants to apply for accreditation with the Higher Education Academy (HEA) as an Associate Fellow (AFHEA).

Training Overview

The training involves a mixture of workshops, one-to-one discussions, observations of lectures, lecturing and lecture design. The focus is gaining practical lecturing experience in a supportive and supported environment. There will be oppotunities to:

  • discuss aspects of the underlying pedagogical theory,
  • gain feedback on your lecturing approach and style
  • experiment with alternative lecturing styles
  • gain experience in developing your own lecturing materials

In addition to attending a number of workshops and tutorials, the training will be based around delivering the Core Statistics courses run by the GSLS Biostatistics Initiative, and so will involve attending at least six 3-hour training sessions (you will be paid for you time). All lecturing material will be provided in the first instance, although part of the training will involve developing your own version of the material for at least one of the sessions.
