GSLS Biostatistics Initiative


We currently provide three categories of bespoke training courses to the university:

Introduction to Scientific Computing and Data Analysis

This course is intended to introduce participants to one of the two most generic scientific computing tools in the life sciences: R and Python. The general course content includes:

  • Introduction to R or Python
  • Basic data mainpulation and visualisation
  • Introduction to programming and automation


Core Statistics

This course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment for researchers in the life sciences. The course covers:

  • Simple Hypothesis testing from t-tests through to linear models and model selction
  • Errors, Power Analyses and Multiple Comparisons


Reproducible Research Skills

This course is intended to provide participants with

  • an understanding of the issues surrounding reproducibility
  • a set of skills for ensuring replicabile data analysis

We currently provide bespoke statistics training courses for the following programmes/institutes/facilities:

  • Bioinformatics Training Facility
  • Sanger Institute
  • Metabolic Research Labs
  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Clinical Medicine
  • MPhil in Basic and Translational Neuroscience
  • Wolfson College

If you belong to any of these departments, programmes or colleges then please check with your local administrator whether you are able to attend one of these bespoke courses.
